Captain's Corner

Work on the Course
While the Kyle authority clear the ditches, clearly the greens staff are being quite inventive with the mowing, and the 7th and 17th shown below are looking great! A few views of the 3rd, 10th and 13th tees too, before and after work. The Management Board continue to prepare a resumption plan, for when restrictions permit, and we have had a good response to the request for volunteer help in the recent management communication, but there's still room for more and will be greatly appreciated.

R&A Rules Quiz
1. Is a caddie always permitted to give their player advice?
Yes. There are no issues under the Rules of Golf with a caddie giving advice to a player.

2. If it is 75% certain that a ball that has not been found is in a penalty area, the player may take back-on-the-line relief from the penalty area, under a penalty of one stroke. True or False?
A player must have 95% certainty to take back-on-line relief under rule 17.1d. Without that knowledge the player must proceed under stroke and distance if the ball is not found within 3 minutes, playing a ball from where the last shot was played. Rule 18.2.

3. In a match between A and B, A has played 3 strokes and B has holed out for 4. A putts and their ball comes to rest, but is overhanging the hole. After 5 seconds, B picks up A's ball to return it to her. What is the ruling?
If a player's ball is overhanging, they have a reasonable time to get to the hole plus a further 10 secs to see if it drops into the hole. If an opponent lifts or moves the ball before the waiting time has ended, the ball is treated as being holed with the previous stroke. There is no penalty to the opponent for lifting or moving the ball. Rule 13.3.

4. In stroke play, a player waiting to play to the putting green dropped the ball on the fairway and hit two putts with their putter. What is the ruling?
A player is not allowed to make any practice strokes during the play of a hole. By dropping a ball on the fairway and taking two strokes with a putter the player gets a general penalty (2 strokes in stroke play. Rule 5.5.

5. In stroke play, a player's ball lies on the putting green. Before playing their next stroke, they tap down spike marks in the vicinity of the hole. What is the ruling?
There is no penalty for tapping down or repairing spike marks on the putting green. A player can repair any damage on the putting green (other than general maintenance marks) without penalty providing they take reasonable action to restore the green to the state prior to damage occurring.

Bad Joke
Husband and wife were playing in a mixed foursomes. He hit a great drive down the middle – she sliced the second shot into a copse of trees. Unfazed, he played a brilliant recovery shot, which went onto the green a foot from the pin. She poked at the putt and sent it ten feet beyond the pin. He lined up the long putt and sank it. He turned to his wife and said, “We’ll have to do better - that was a bogey five.” “Don’t blame me,” she snapped, “I only took two shots, you took three!”
